Math Agent was first developed in 2006 as a playing card game. At the time, I was working as a grade 5 elementary school special education teacher. I noticed that while some of my special needs students were struggling with basic arithmetic, they were deeply engaged with their peers playing trading card games such as "Pokemon" and "Magic."
What was going on here? The key, I realized, was that these games were a medium for social-interaction for kids with one another. While there was some arithmetic involved, it didn't seem to help with my immediate classroom objectives, so I came up with my own game that would combine concepts and vocabulary that I wanted them to learn while providing an enjoyable context for interaction for my students.
The initial rollout in my classroom was a success, and I was later invited to implement it school wide at another public school in New York City.
Now over a decade later--after a tour of duty earning a PhD in Mathematics Education from the University of California, Berkeley, and working as an iOS developer--Math Agent has finally been brought to life in a format that makes it accessible to children and adults everywhere.
